Still messing around with this guy. Trying to figure what kind of story he’s going to belong to.

New Bat Character

Working on the concept for a new book, and this little guy popped up. I’m really enjoying him so far, let’s see if I can keep his essence that is captured here once I start rendering him up a little more.

This is the next children’s book I’m working on. These are just a few of the spreads. The story is by Dan Wentzel, who lives in Seattle, so we’ve been corresponding back and forth across the continent. We just got past the initial mock up stage, so now comes all of the rendering for me- while he works on text placement. Wish us luck.

Here’s my latest venture for the always active Collective Face Theatre Ensemble. This is it of course all stripped down (pun intended), in that area of perfect balance between text and imagery. From here I put in all the necessary information, which gets plenty of scrutinization and aesthetic thought also, but I do always love these posters at this simple moment before all of that.

The show’s in August; I’ll have the full poster up in gallery soon enough with all the information.

I entered this in the poster contest for the upcoming Children’s Book Festival in Savannah, GA. My poster got second place in the college level category, so I get to go to the reception at the Bull St library this coming wednesday. I’m very excited about this, because I can’t wait to meet the young artist responsible for the piece below. Funny how we strive as artists for so long to learn the skills of our trades, only to realize that once you have those skills, you need to let go of much of the control you have over them. I feel this piece is a perfect example of just that. In the end, I think the whole elementary level schooled us all. See all the entries here Children’s Book Fest 2012

Here he is in all his glory, I hope it does him justice. I will drop him into an environment at some point, but right now I’ve got to get started on the Collective Face‘s poster for their next production No Exit.

Here he is with facial features. There’s still more to do that will help the features to settle into the head and give it more dimension, but I thought this would be a nice point in the process to show. The best part about this, and the most time consuming, is that none of these features are from pictures of Eddie. I have to determine what kind of features he has, and then go searching for each individual feature from other faces and piece them all together as Eddie.

This is how all of the works start. I try to get to the simplest portrayal of the subject in this first step. Usually they are even more simplified and basic geometric shapes, but this time I am trying to portray a likeness so there is a little more shaping. Having said that, this is my first attempt at portraying a specific person, so we’ll see…
